"This will be an article focusing on one particular DJ Mix; Giegling Mix 07: DJ Metatron - This Is Not. In this review I'll briefly touch on this anonymous German electronic music artist and his numerous aliases, what each of them stands for, what kind of music is behind them and why he built up a cult-like following the previous decade that few other artists are able to match. I'll then go into further detail on his DJ Metatron moniker and it's personal connection to me, particularly this mix of his. I'll also be highlighting the transformative power of a DJ Mix and why it can be just as, if not more valid, than an album."
DJ Metatron is an anonymous electronic music producer who used to be a member of the German-based Giegling Collective (a label he started up with friends of his at uni) in the early 2010s before splitting away to operate under his own label: allpossibleworlds
Widely regarded as one of the best electronic music producers of the 2010s, he had an absolutely phenomenal run under multiple anonymous aliases releasing vinyl-only House, Techno, Trance, Ambient as well as online mixes incorporating these genres,Downtempo, Hiphop, DnB and the interstitial space between all of it.
Note: In my opinion he fell off around 2021 going from flawless to quite okay and his releases became sporadic. He pretty much releases stuff only when he feels like and the only assumption I’ve drawn about him nowadays is that he’s kinda tired and creatively tapped out-ish from the hey days of 10+ years ago. It's also assumed he became a father due to having a picture of an unborn child on one of his latest mixes. He also started releasing his tracks on bandcamp in 2026, presumably as a fuck you to the insane prices his vinyl commands due to the very limited runs they had. He never comes across as someone motivated by finances (but I may be a victim of the slickest marketing campaign ever). At the end of this review I shall post each of his aliases, a brief description as well as one or two must-listen things but we’re going to majorly focus on Giegling Mix 07: DJ Metatron - This Is Not.
Metatron is an Archangel of God regarded as his Voice, able to speak on his behalf and holding a position of such importance in his kingdom that for all intents and purposes, he might as well be God.
It might seem odd to invoke religion in very club-based genres but DJ Metatron fully understands that the Club and the Church are two sides of the same coin. Shared communion before an altar bringing together a very random group of people to invoke something greater than themselves over the course of a few hours. And this isn’t simply a heady concept he casually hints at: q lot of his references range from actual religious iconography to music with religious content in it.
A techno track of under his Traumprinz alias for example, casually invokes a sample at one point of a former drug addict describing his abandonment by his parents, his descent into drug use, his party lifestyle throughout his travels, the pain and emptiness he felt inside and the one point he started contemplating giving his life up to Jesus so he could start to find meaning in his it. It’s a particularly hilarious track to drop on a hedonistic club floor in the middle of the night.
His 2 The Sky EP has crosses on the album cover and includes the title-track, an incredible 10 min ambient-house journey with a woman repeating ad nauseam 2 The Sky…Back Into The Sky. By the time you get to the end of track, it genuinely feels like you yourself have been lifted up to the pearly gates and taken to heaven’s only nightclub where the angels spin nothing but his music exclusively. I’d say that’s a very apt description of its sonic properties.
Another track of his under his DJ Healer moniker has another woman praising the wonderfulness of God’s creation. Nobody knows which particular creation but he often tends to have a lot of ambiguity with his sampling that lets you project your own internal world onto his music.

That music (and generally that of his former label) tends to sit somewhere between emotional pain and cathartic relief through the shared act of clubbing/club music (as well as cozy headphone home music).
His vocal samples can sometimes be so obscure yet so relevant it feels like God himself handed them down to him.
His production comes across as easy to master... yet there is no other person like Traumprinz. His sonic fingerprint is so distinctly his own that people are able to pick out his productions every time he starts up a new alias. The way he processes his kicks, the ambient pads, the chords he uses, the vocal samples, the sheer amount of emotion he’s able to wring out of such sparse arrangement is just uncopyable (not that people haven't tried). Some new anonymous alias will randomly pop up on some dodgy looking website, asking you to fork over anything from 20 to 80 euros at times and the whispers will start going around the internet.
"Traumprinz is back".
"I'm not really sure but I think it's him".
"My paycheck isn't due soon but I'm taking out a loan because no way am I missing this".
Very wise words as those records would sell out in like a day flat, maybe two max. The sheer amount of faith people would put into their purchases was almost....like a religion.
I first ran across his music after an internet friend of mine recommended his DJ Mix: Giegling Mix 07 - This Is Not. I’m Kenyan and had never cared about house or techno before in my life and was extremely skeptical about this recommendation. When I finished it, I genuinely thought it was a bit boring but something stuck in me and I found myself coming back to it again and again whenever I needed something calm to study to. And just like that I was hooked onto his world. To this day it’s still in my top three electronic music media of all time. A singular work of art that transcended the confines of a DJ Mix to become a transformation of my soul (and my music taste).
Chapter One
The mix starts off with some extremely tranquil ambient pads that almost sound like God’s breathing on you. Then some soft kicks start to fade in with a bassline and what to this day sounds to me like some kind of rattly air conditioning. He does his own remix of a rominimal house track whose name I wish I could remember before transitioning into a track of his that was later released under his Traumprinz alias called Where Is Home; an achingly beautiful ambient house track for all the searchers, lovers and dreamers. It's here that the groove is so mind-numbingly hypnotic I genuinely feel like I’m on drugs in some chillout room casually bopping my head along to the narcotic beats, unable to escape.
Two other remixes then successively pop up: a rework of a dub techno track by Detroit artist Darling Farah, carefully rearranged with a light signature touch that feels just right; and a tech-house remix of fellow German minimal enthusiast Efdemin.
It’s at this point with the Efdemin - Parallaxis (Remix) that he unleashes his full powers and the magnitude of his music’s beauty is put on full display. It also happens to be the only track of his you can find on regular streaming services other than one that’s part of a DJ Kicks Mix (he comes across as someone who despises the fast food nature of services like Spotify).

The Parallaxis Remix is one of the greatest tracks he's ever produced and closes out the first half of this DJ Mix at roughly 27 min. A vocal sample croons Over To The End repeatedly, at one desperately pleading Please.
I do not know what release the man behind the sample aches for but I 100% percent understand where he’s coming from. Cheers and whistling from what sounds like an incredible party appears before an almighty breakbeat is dropped soon after….and then you truly start to get down, tears and all.
This is that one specific magical moment at the club where your friends have disappeared, the drugs are hitting perfectly and you’re surrounded by total strangers dancing in unison alongside you. Gazing at the sea of beaming smiling faces, you find no desire to seek your companions out at all. Where is home? Home is here
Everything Is Everything Is Everything.
Interlude
Having closed out the first chapter of this DJ Mix, a vocal interlude called The Journey under his Metatron alias then appears. It’s the comedown to the Parallaxis Remix, a spliced up sample of Jake Gyllenhaal talking about his experience on the Donnie Darko film set while Moby-esque ambient pads play in the background.
This one sample in particular is the perfect encapsulation of the ‘Metatron Experience’. Rarely do we know what the fuck he truly means and off the top of my head he’s only ever given one interview, with Resident Advisor, in his entire career.
I don’t think he himself even fully comprehends what his samples mean at times. They feel like bite-sized bits of therapy for you to derive your own meaning from: a technique which makes them endlessly refreshing the older I grow, interpreting my ever-changing life circumstances through their lens.
Chapter Two
DJ Metatron - State Of Me has it’s piano notes creep in to start off the second chapter of this mix before descending into another breakbeat then a breakdown that feels like it stretches to the end of time yet never bores you before re-introducing the breakbeat with some incredible clap programming (my second favourite after the ones in Rave Child). The track is so melancholic it feels like I’m trying to get to some kind of breakthrough that never fully materialises.
The mix then masterfully transitions into a DnB track, Traumprinz - There Will Be XTC. A music video of it exists on Youtube but in over a decade of being a fan I still don’t know if he’s the one who made it.
He has a certain sense of whimsy with his art such as leaking alternate versions of tracks on soulseek, dropping short album previews that sound like the worst electronic music of your life before the actual thing drops, its totally amazing and you realise you’ve been trolled. Dropping albums on Easter, being booked to do a Boielr Room DJ set in Tulum before inevitably not showing up, leaving just a laptop playing his latest album.
Using some low-effort picture of clouds as his album cover for a new alias among other oddities such as naming his Soundcloud account Planet Uterus (where he does b2b dj sets with his other aliases lol).

We then arrive at the album closer Traumprinz - 2 Bad (Metatron's What If Madness Is Our Only Relief Mix). I still get a chuckle from this name as someone who has used his music A LOT to help me cope with my mental health. I don’t think there’s any other artist in my listening history who’s single-handedly carried me through some incredibly tough times in my life like he has.
A Mary J. Blige vocal sample is used in a devastatingly effective manner and every time I get to the end of this track, the end of this mix, I always arrive at one conclusion. Life is Tough, Life is Hard and It Fucking Sucks. But I need to keep soldiering on because the good times are worth it.
That bittersweetness, which I’m sure has some fancy German word, is life in all its beauty and all its ugliness; a contemplation I’m left to ponder over as the mix gently fades out into a sea of cassette hiss.
As a DJ myself, I can tell you it's incredibly hard to have a perfect DJ Mix in your life. 9/10 I've hit plenty of times but that golden one seems to pop up once every couple of years or so (and I've lost more mixes than I remember because I used to churn them out like mad). It's quite a lot like cooking.
He used the perfect ingredients (his own productions/remixes no less), perfectly sequenced them and carved out an incredible journey out of these tracks with very distinct stages throughout the mix. Did he make it on a computer? Sure but use whatever too lets you reach nirvana once in your life. This is a perfect example of a DJ Mix being far far greater than the majority of electronic albums ever released. And the crazy thing is he repeated it again.

I consider the mix above to be the clubbier companion to Mix 05's Chillout Room vibes.
Aliases
Traumprinz - Majorly his emotional house releases.
(To this day he still hasn't released any of the tracks in the mix above)
Prince of Denmark - Majorly his Dub/Minimal Techno releases
DJ Metatron - Largely his Trance experimentations
Rave Child is my favourite track of his. Never gets old. He peaked with this EP
Prime Minister of Doom - Largely dub techno and tribal techno/house.
DJ Healer - It's always fifty-fifty to me whether his older Metatron music is more spiritual than the stuff under here or if it's the other way round. Largely ambient, ambient-house.
The Phantasy - An Ibiza-tinged take on his house music with very strong undercurrents of darkness
From here I would say go off on your own. You’ll find his material post-giegling largely repeats the motifs he did under Prince of Denmark (The Father), Traumprinz (The Son) and DJ Metatron (The Holy Spirit) with each new alias leaning close to one of these or embodying the in-between.
Let's sob together on the dancefloor :)
