"Review of Bleach by Nirvana"
Bleach is the debut album of the most iconic grunge rock band of all time, Nirvana. Out of all three of their studio albums, “Bleach” is easily their weakest, yet for a debut album it’s much better than it should’ve been. It doesn’t include too many of my personal favorite Nirvana songs, but that doesn’t mean it’s not without its highlights. The record has some very catchy hooks and memorable guitar riffs. Songs like “About a Girl” and “School” are some of the most catchy tracks in Nirvana’s entire discography. Plus, “Bleach” is filled with Nirvana’s heaviest songs. “Floyd the Barber,” “Paper Cuts,” “Negative Creep,” and “Scoff” are probably the four heaviest Nirvana songs, all of which are on “Bleach.” In their next albums Nirvana seemed to pretty much abandon the guitar chugs that are present all over this album, which is fine, but I think those chugs work very well with Cobain’s voice. Also, “Bleach” is the only Nirvana album not to feature drummer Dave Grohl, as Chad Channing was originally their drummer. Channing did a fairly good job, but I think Grohl’s drumming is one of a few reasons their next efforts were superior.
There are a few moments on the album that don’t stand out a whole lot, the biggest offender being “Scoff,” which is the eighth track on the record. It’s a fairly generic grunge song, and the hook isn’t good enough to save it. But it’s the only track that’s really like that for me, as even some of the less interesting tracks at least have a really good hook, like the slightly overlong “Sifting.”
Despite being their weakest album, “Bleach” is a very impressive debut for the 90s most iconic rock band. If you’ve somehow never heard a Nirvana record, I wouldn’t really start with this one unless you want to listen to them chronologically, but do give it a listen at some point if you haven’t already.
