IHNDIGS026.7 // Dyr Faser - Singles

Every year when fall starts creeping around the corner, I start looking for music that actually sounds & feels like it. I was recently sent IHNDIGS026.7 // Dyr Faser - Singles, a collection released through I HEART NOISE, and I don’t think I was prepared for how strange some of this music was going to get.

Now let me be completely fair here, psychedelic/krautrock is not a typical genre I listen to (I had never heard this genre prior btw). On “Winter Olympics” there’s this weird flanger/phasing effect running through it and the first image that came into my head was that this would be playing in the background of an indie movie or TV show where the main character and their love interest are both kinda drunk, walking around at night, and laughing together.

It’d be freezing outside in the middle of October, and they’d both be stumbling down the sidewalk. It’s weird, but it’s the type of weird where, if I’m in the mood for it, I really like it.

My favorite song within the collection of singles is probably “Desert Floor” where I believe there’s a little bit of what sounds like early Beach House haziness in here, mixed with some Cocteau Twins-esque dreaminess, except Dyr Faser pushes everything through a much rougher rock lens. It doesn’t feel polished really at all in the traditional sense, and I kind of enjoyed that in this specific song.

“Bronze” is another favorite, mostly because of the female vocals. Her delivery immediately reminds me of 2010s indie/alternative songs that I’ve been enjoying as of late. It’s dreamy without disappearing completely into the production, and compared to some of the stranger vocal performances across the collection, I found myself liking this one almost immediately. Even though the guitar riff starts to feel repetitive after a while, it also becomes the engine of the song.

“Like That” sounds like it belongs in a vampire show like early Vampire Diaries or another eerie show like earlier American Horror Story. There’s a creepiness within the song that I really like, and a lot of that comes from its use of dissonance. Basically, instead of giving you chords and notes that comfortably resolve into each other, you get sounds that kinda clash. Your brain automatically waits for the tension to disappear, and Dyr Faser doesn’t give you that satisfaction, which sort of makes the song feel unsettling without needing to do anything stereotypically spooky (if that makes sense), which I think is something this collection does really well.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a line between experimental music that challenges me and experimental music that makes me want to skip the song, and “More of This” crosses that line for me. The off-kilter vocals, combined with the dissonant chords, make the instruments and all other elements in the song feel like they're fighting for space.

I do love experimentation in music, but there are points throughout Singles where it feels experimental simply for the sake of being experimental. Of course, there’s obviously an audience that will hear that and go, well duh that’s the whole point and they’re probably right - I’m just not always that right audience.
